Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan

The film documents the legal use of narcotic plant production for pharmaceutical purposes in Central Asia, following prohibition, trafficking, as well as drug abuse and alcoholism. Interviews of participants of the extensive opium plantation in Soviet Kyrgyzstan and Southern Kazakhstan, including former drug dealers, officials, and a famous rehabilitation professional and politician prove that opium plantation had profound and long-lasting political, psychological and social repercussions until the present day. Based on interviews, archival footage and photographs, as well as animation, the film attempts to respond to what can be called a collective trauma that started with events such as the Opium War in China, the flight of the Dungan to Central Asia, and other events.
